Gamecube DOL-001 - No Sound But It Plays Discs
« on: December 05, 2019, 12:02:07 PM »
I have a black gamecube that did not read discs or have sound.  When you turn it on you get the menu but no sound.

-  Adjusted the laser pot and now it reads discs every time but still no sound
-  Tried soldering a wire from the 5V to the cap (as suggested by another website) did not work
-  Bought a replacement Motherboard which was known working fully - did not work

It has been cleaned and I do not see any issues on the boards like corrosion or any bad caps.

Has anyone else run into this?

I heard it could be the power supply board underneath the mother board?

Have you done the fundamentals first, like checking your AV cable, ground, checking your AV ports for corrosion or looseness, solder joints, etc.? Do you have any spare boards that you can swap to try and narrow down the problem? Is there any sound at all coming from the Gamecube out port (hum, buzz, etc.) If there is a hum or buzz it may well be a short somewhere. Check for any excessive heat emanating from areas of the board or chips. use some flux and heat and note any heat spots. If all else fails, replace the PSU as that has been known to create such audio difficulties.

So let me answer those questions I should have been more accurate with what I have done:

Have you done the fundamentals first, like checking your AV cable?  Yes checked with a brand new one and one known working upstairs in my gameroom.

, ground, checking your AV ports for corrosion or looseness, solder joints, etc.? Checked both boards I had which were known working both could not be bad but they both were clean and no corrosion
Do you have any spare boards that you can swap to try and narrow down the problem? Already swapped out original board for a replacement one which was tested to work
Is there any sound at all coming from the Gamecube out port (hum, buzz, etc.) If there is a hum or buzz it may well be a short somewhere. No sound at all complete quiet except the laser reading disc and spinning in console
Check for any excessive heat emanating from areas of the board or chips. use some flux and heat and note any heat spots. If all else fails, replace the PSU as that has been known to create such audio difficulties.  I am going to try swapping out the PSU from another working gamecube I have and see if thats the issue I believe it is.

I know this was posted a while ago, but I'm answering it because it might help someone else. I had this problem also on one of the gamecube's (DOL-001) that I was going to sell. It has the picture, but no sound. After talking to a technician, it turns out it was the 5v fuse on the power board underneath the metal shield where the black and red go to the power button. Once I replaced that, and I had a hard time soldering it because it was tiny, the sound returned, and all was well.  Hope that may help someone who is in the position I was in and got no help from any of the blogs or forums.
