n64gm153 - Spider Man 64 was developed by Neversoft Entertainment, Inc. and published by Activision Publishing, Inc. It was released for the Nintendo 64 (N64) Entertainment System on November 20, 2000. Everyone's favorite comic featuring Spider-Man is now a 3rd-Person Perspective 3D action game loosely based upon Marvel Comics' friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, and fashioned after "Spider-Man: The Animated Series," and "Spider-Man Unlimited." It features character designs and voice-overs by some of the cast from both series. The game scenario is that Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider and now possesses super human strength and spider-like powers. He is attending a science exposition where there is to be a presentation of a new invention by the rehabilitated Dr. Otto Octavius. But someone dressed as Spiderman swoops in and steals the device. Now, as the inimitable web crawler Spiderman, you must work to get to the bottom of the mysterious theft, clear your name and uncover the pernicious reason that the device's was stolen.

You do this by controlling Spider-man as he swings in his web through New York city going through ad on top of the buildings, while many Spiddy villains and enemies try to keep you from completing your mission. You have the ability to throw objects such as chairs or balls of web, or use your web to pull villains into melee range where you can follow up with combination hits. You can jump and run, punch and kick, and also use your sticky hands to cling to diverse surfaces and shoot spiddy webs. The web is multi-task friendly as you can use it for navigational purposes, for offense and for defensive purposes. You can use the web to tie up villains or to create traps of all kinds to capture your enemies, but you must find new web cartridges or you will run out of web. The developers clearly took care to have Spiderman's powers remain faithful to his character and they should be congratulated on a job well done. Throughout the game, you can pick up web cartridge and also health cartridges when your health is failing. Spiderman 64 features appearances not only by most major Spider-Man characters (Scorpio, Venom, and Rhino), but you will also see numerous characters from the Marvel Universe, including Captain America, the Punisher, Daredevil and the Human Torch. The game features four skill modes, which are Kid Mode, Easy Mode, Normal Mode and Hard Mode. For the beginner Spiderman 64 features a practice mode where you can enter training sessions. These include, Time Attack, Survival Mode, Speed Training, Target Practice and Item Collection. There are a number of boss-battles as well, all of which are puzzle-based. There are also multiple unlockable costumes and numerous hidden Spiderman comic book covers to find. The missions include common "battle your way to the goal" to "find the pertinent key to open some secret door, but also other goals in addition to the main mission.

The graphics in this game are overall actually above average. While some textures are not top-of-the-line, the game makes up for any drawbacks with its huge environments, and outstanding backgrounds that stand out as nicely modeled. The sound effects expand upon the mood of the game, as the web-throwing sounds, punches and kicks are outstanding. This combined with the excellent voice-over make for great sound effects. The music is quite exciting and even stimulating, and "for the most part" as you play through the game it seems to get even better. The music composer obviously did a really good job of matching the appropriate music with the action and mood. The game controls are simple enough to master so that even younger players will have no problem getting a handle on controlling the character. Though Spider-man 64 does not quite make the all time top 5 N64 games list, it is no less a great game, a outstanding accomplishment by the developers, and great fun for the whole family. I recommend it highly. Also known as Spider Man, Spider-Man 64 and Spiderman 64. Pre-owned - Includes Game Only, no manual or instructions are included. Rarity Rating "C" - Spiderman 64 game review by Prince NES Gamer.
