N64GM016 - Developed and published by Nintendo of America Inc., "Mario Kart 64" was released for the Nintendo 64 game system on February 12, 1997. If you loved the head to head action of Super Mario Kart for the SNES, you'll love Mario Kart 64. It is a worthy update, as the 2-D graphics have become 3-D and it keeps all of the old tried and true features while improving with better track design. And this time around players can race as everybody from Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Bowser, the Princess and Wario. There are new race courses, new racers and even a four-player simultaneous play option. You race on four progressively tougher four-track circuits. The game offers three engine sizes for your racer, which are 50cc, 100cc and 150cc. And if that's not enough, you can gain even more speed by picking up power-ups and learning to power slide. Each of the kart racers has unique handling styles, acceleration and speed capabilities. They are typically divided into light, medium and heavy classes and are balanced accordingly. For example, the light accelerates fastest and smoothly steer through tight corners, but has lowest top speed. They are agile, but they run the risk of being knocked around by heavy Karts. But the heavy karts don't accelerate fast and are not agile on the corners, but have a better top speed. And they can knock the lighter karts around. Medium fits somewhere in between the two. One of the most interesting and fun aspects of mario kart 64 is the use of unique weapon power-ups. If you hit another racer with a lightning bolt, it makes them small and very slow. While hitting them with Bananas and they will skid out. You can also shoot shells at other racers. The gameplay is great, as Mario kart 64 takes traditional racing, and throws in the Mario characters and the fun element of combat. And I loved the "adventuristic" feel of the race courses. The graphics are very good, the 3-D rendering very good, and each level well detailed with that familiar Mario charm. This is a great multiplayer party game, and one of the funniest available. Mario Kart 64 is one of those "Just Plain Fun" games you hear so much about. Most likely one of the greatest racing games of it's decade. The early pre-release title for Mario kart 64 was "Mario Kart R". Pre-owned - Includes Game Only, no manual or instructions are included. Mario Kart racing game review by "The Prince" NES Gamer.
