N64GM037 - Developed and published by Capcom Entertainment, Inc., "Resident Evil 2" is a rare game that was released for the Nintendo 64 system in November of 1999. This is the sequel to the smash hit Capcom game, Resident Evil. And as in the original, Resident Evil II is also 3D using three-dimensional polygon characters over two-dimensional pre-rendered backgrounds. The original can be called nothing short of revolutionary, and Resident Evil 2 takes up where it left off. The scenario of this game is that after Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine destroyed the Umbrella corporation's walking dead, the virus disease still managed to get out and spread to Raccoon City. You can play Resident Evil 2 as either rookie cop Leon Kennedy, or as Chris Redfield's motorcycle riding sister, Claire Redfield. Whatever character you choose to play as, they both begin the same with the same initial scenario, but find different people and have access to different type of weapons. You arrive in Raccoon City to find it ablaze, with the inhabitants being zombies due to the virus outbreak. A nice change from the original is more diverse forms of walking dead, like cops and teenager. Claire and Leon team up for a short time, but most of the game they are on their own, or will receive periodic help from another survivor. Resident Evil 2 still has the core style gameplay of the original, but with a few upgrades. The graphics are great for the Nintendo 64 era, as they are viewed through a variety of cinematic fixed camera angles. And there are a variety of new maps, locations, undead and a longer more climactic ending. The sound effects are fantastic, as each gun and voice sounds different and you get the real feel and atmosphere of the game. If you beat resident Evil 2, a second scenario is unlocked where you can play it as the character you didn't choose originally. One politically correct change is that if you are easily offended, you now have the option to change the color of blood from red to green or blue, and to set violence to low, medium, or high. Resident Evil 2 is a instant classic action adventure that improved on the the core gameplay of the original, as well as the story. Its an immersive classic that is deep, dark and mysterious, and a frightfully enjoyable experience to play.
