#gm0254 - Developed and Published by Konami, Inc., "Top Gun" was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in November of 1987. This is a 1st-Person Perspective flight and jet combat simulator action game that is loosely based on the film of the same name. Controlled from a first-person cockpit view, you pilot a F-14 Tomcat fighter jet through four different missions. In your second sortie, you will have to hook up to a refueling plane, and this is fairly difficult. If you don't lock in your fuel nozzle in time, you fun out of time, the refueling plane will go away and your plane will crash. Mastering this refueling task is a must. You have two diverse weapon systems to choose to do battle with. First, there is your F-14 machine gun, and this carries unlimited ammunition. The second are your missiles, that you can select before each mission. There are three different kinds, and the amount you can carry varies depending upon how big and powerful they are. The bigger they are, the less you can carry. Each mission has different targets that must be destroyed either in air, ground or on the sea. At the end of each of your missions, you must successfully land your aircraft on the American aircraft carrier. And it is crucial to watch and adjust your altitude and speed in order to make it aboard the carrier safely. If you land safely, you will receive bonus points. If you crash your plane while attempting to land on the carrier, you will lose one life. The graphics of this game are good, not great. The sound is commensurate to the style ands action of the game, and the game play I thought was very good, with adequate control. Top Gun ranks as an innovative game, ahead of its time, and one of the more noteworthy games for the NES. It is one of the earliest realistic flight simulators, and certainly not an easy game to conquer. But along with the challenge, it is also a lot of fun.
