Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean

GCG0078 - Developed by Tri-Crescendo Inc. and published by Namco Hometek Inc., Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean was released on November 16 of 2004. The lavishly detailed captivating world of "Baten Kaitos" is a fantastic excursion into fairy tale gaming on a unique art styling level. The title, "Baten kaitos," is Arabic and means "the belly of the whale." It is also the name given a star in the constellation Cetus (the whale). In conjunction with this, this adventure takes place on islands of sorts, that float in the heavens surrounded by space. People live on these islands high in the heavens and stories of an Earth surrounded by water is merely a planet of legends. The people now have wings of the Hearts protruding from their backs. This is a 3rd-Person Perspective Medieval/Fantasy card-based battle system that can change over time, and features detailed gamecube cutscenes to tell the story. The scenario is that you play the game as the guardian spirit bonded with a blue haired boy named Kalas, who is born with only one wing. Kalas receives a second mechanical wing crafted by his grandfather, a great master. And he is on a quest to find the murderers of his grandfather and brother. On this quest he meets a mysterious girl named Xelha, who is seeking to stop an evil conspiracy to resurrect a dark god and that threatens their world. Kalas and Xelha join forces to defeat this evil. Kalas will pose questions to you and ask for advise, and your answers will determine Kalas' general disposition and way of behaving in fights. There are many bonus items to be found in the game, such as weapons, spells, healing, etc., that will help you on your quest. You can take real items and turn them into Magnus form and store them in blank cards. It can later be taken out to revert back to real form. As stated, the gameplay is largely based on the "turn system" where the outcome is all in the cards. When you come into contact an enemy, a turn-based battle begins and the cards you play affect the outcome. You can also use your stored cards. But unlike some turn based RPGs, you choose not to fight because enemies are visible, and you can learn to go around many of them if you're not inclined to fight. This game is quite a bit longer than most RPGs, but there's a wealth of beautiful detailed atmospheric side quests that make this game even more rewarding if you are willing. this is a two disc adventure, so be prepared for a long epic and unique adventure. Includes case, instruction booklet, and the two-disks! Pre-owned. Includes case, disk and instruction manual - Plays on Gamecube or Wii - Rarity Rating C. Review by Prince NES Gamer
