Penny Racers

n64gm140 - Developed by Takara/Locomotive and Published by THQ Inc., "Penny Racers" was released for the Nintendo 64 (N64) Entertainment System in February of 1999. This game is a 1st-Person / 3rd-Person Perspective racing game based on the theme of toy miniaturized cars. Choro Q had been a popular game franchise in Japan for years, and it made its debut in North America in the form of Penny Racers. In the beginning of the game, you can only race in the lower difficulty races (Class C), but you will unlock more when you finish in the top three of the competition. There are two racing modes which consist of a Race series and a Time trial (where you race against the clock). You have a variety of 13 different race car bodies to choose from, and there are nine tracks to race them on, and they are all available right from the start. The 9 tracks are Country Arena, Lakeside, Harbor, Mountain, Ruins, Volcano, Alpine, Caves and Ice. There is a third mode that will allow you to design and create your own racing tracks. You race with 5 competitors through various locations, including city streets. Penny Racers is heavy on customizing. There are 25 engine types, 12 wheel/tire variations, 21 special parts, 9 different brake types, 10 suspension styles, 8 types of body armor and 15 special weapons to gain the edge on your competition. A cool aspect of this game is that you can take parts from the other racer's cars at the end of each race if you are among the first three racers that cross the finish line. You can also customize your car’s parts (body, engine, tires, etc.) at the beginning of the races if you have different ones in stock. The graphics are not that good, but what do you expect from cartoonish wacky cars. The sound and music are pretty good, and the control is also average. The game also supports up to four human players. Penny Racers for the N64 has a high replay value, and the multiplayer action is a good reason for that. The game is part of the Japanese racing game series Choro Q and is known by the name Choro Q 64 in Japan.
