gm0270 - Developed by Beam Software Pty., Ltd. and Published by LJN, Ltd., "The Punisher" was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in November of 1990. This is a 3rd-person perspective action shooter based on the the Marvel Comic book series hero, ex-marine Frank Castle. The game scenario is that Frank's family has been killed by the Mafia, and he has gone undercover to battle New York's organized crime as a black tights wearing, machine gun toting crime fighter. You'll be delighted to know that most of his classic comic book enemies are here, including Hitman, Sijo and longtime Punisher nemesis Jigsaw. Each criminal boss has two levels with plenty of enemies, followed by the main boss showdown. This is one of the very few rail shooters made for the NES, and though it didn't receive high acclaim from the critics, it was a hit with gamers. Mainly because it is fun and features an extraordinary amount of things that can be destroyed on all its levels. The gameplay is standard rail, featuring six missions, except that you have the additional ability to move Frank from the left to the right (and vice-versa) of the screen in order to get out of the way of oncoming fire. Just be sure to avoid civilian casualties as you fight your way through the five levels. You also pick up many power-ups including grenades, a kevlar vest, rocket launcher, a Super gun and armor. The Super gun is yours to keep in the next stage if you earn a 100 percent kill rating. In order to aim, you simply hold down the fire button, which locks Frank down so you can move your aiming cursor. I was also quite impressed with the graphics considering it's the NES, as thy are pretty good for the NES environment, with sharp, bright enemies and backgrounds. As for music, the Punisher for NES has none, except some guy on a saxophone that pops up sporadically. Not the best NES game, but what do you expect from a shooter other than Mindless shooter.
