gm0332 - Developed by Kawada, Co. Ltd and published by Acclaim Entertainment, Inc., "Othello" was released for the NES in December of 1988. Othello is a fast paced conversion of the timeless board game, and is as easy to learn as checkers. In fact, Nintendo touts Othello as the game that takes "A Minute to Learn, A Lifetime to Master," and from this gamer's perspective, they are right on the money with that. Othello is a two player board game played on a 8 by 8 grid of 64 squares, using discs colored black on one side and white on the other. Similar to Checkers, the players are represented by the colors of the disc. Taking turns, each player places one of his discs on the game board, and tries to fill it with as many discs of his color as possible. The object of the game being to select a location where your opponents' discs will become trapped between two of yours discs. If you trap one of your opponent's discs between yours, they must then flip it over, converting to your color disk. Whoever has the most discs at the end of the game wins. There are four skill levels. In skill level 1 the player may cancel as many moves as he chooses. In skill level 2 the player may cancel only 5 moves. In skill level 3, players may cancel only three moves per game. In skill level 4 there is no move canceling allowed. Two players can play Othello against each other, or one player can play the game against the computer. Othello is a nice challenging strategy board game that takes patience, intuitive placements and strategy to win.
