#gm0190 - Description and Game Review: Developed by Beam Software Pty., Ltd. and Published by Mindscape, Inc., "Days of Thunder" was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in October of 1990. Loosely based upon the Tom Cruise film of the same name, Day's of Thunder brings a realistic 3rd-Person perspective recreation of NASCAR stock car racing for the NES masses. The game scenario is that you play the role of rookie driver Cole Trickle as you take on your racing rivals in a tough season that consists of eight races. These eight grueling races will be run on seven of the best tracks NASCAR has. These race tracks are all standard NASCAR oval, but vary in gradients, corner styles and length. And so you have to adjust your driving according to the track you are on. Because the perfect racing lane on one track may be the path to your crashing into the wall on another. Before each race, you participate in a four-lap qualifying round in order to earn your starting position. Of course, like any race, the object is to stay in the lead and finish first. Days of Thunder is a realistic recreation of actual NASCAR racing, so your race car and tires will need refueling, take damage and have tire wear. As a result, you will occasionally need to make pits stops. Deciding strategically when to make pit stops to refuel, and which repairs to make while in the pits, just may be the difference between winning and loosing. Keep in mind that carelessly loosing time in pit stops will cause you to loose positions in the race. But you do control a five man pit crew to help you in that endeavor. When you consider the limitations of the gaming platforms of the NES era, the graphics are surprisingly good. There is not much music in this game (nor should there be), except for the standard tune, the music you hear when you blow the engine, when you fail to win or run out of gas. There is also the victory music, and the music when you win the championship. Apart from the music, the sound effects, such as the engine and the air guns in the pit, are sweet! Days of Thunder is one of the oldest and toughest racing games of the NES Era. Pre-owned - Includes Game Only - ESRB Rating N/A - Rarity Rating C+ - Days of Thunder Review by "NES Gamer".
