Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

#sgm0050 - SNES Game Review - Developed and Published by Nintendo Co., Ltd., "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996 and became an instant classic. It is the rare and popular sequel to "Super Mario World," and was designed as a 3rd-Person Perspective side-scrolling action platformer. It is easily one of the greatest side scrollers made for the SNES. The game scenario takes place in the past when Mario and His brother are just a baby. The Evil Magikoopa, Kamek, is out to kidnap the two twins, but they only manage to get Lugi. Baby Mario has fallen down onto Yoshi's island. You play the game as the Yoshis, and are on a journey to successfully deliver baby Mario to his parents in the Mushroom Kingdom. Unfortunately Kamek has sent his army and many monsters to stop your mission and snatch the baby Mario. Lots of nice features, such as the flutter jump, where Yoshi can clear large gaps that a regular jump can't. Moreover, Yoshis can transform into a train, helicopter or submarine, or a train. Of course, as in the previous Super mario World, Yoshi can swallow enemies to make eggs, which can be used for attacking or activating controls. Other features are the power stars. If a star is collected by you, the helpless baby mario becomes invincible and can run up certain walls. The sound in this game is almost flawless. Made up of flutes and other wind and percussion instruments, it delivers a beautiful soothing atmosphere that fits the game perfectly. The graphics are special, as Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island features the Super FX2 chip that provides beautiful special effects and incredibly smooth scrolling. It also allows for seamless multiple foregrounds, backgrounds, rotation and zooming. The land is huge and the levels in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island have a smartly designed and unique look and feel that gives this game great atmosphere. And the levels become increasingly difficult. There are six worlds, each with its own eight stages (48 total). Making your adventure more enjoyable and beneficial, there are six diverse bonus round games where you can win items or earn extra lives. All in all, there is really nothing negative that I can think of to say about this masterpiece. A must for any SNES game collector. In Japan Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is simply known as "Super Mario: Yoshi's Island".
