n64gm154 - Developed by Midway Games West, Inc. and Published by Midway Games, Inc., "Gauntlet Legends" was released for the Nintendo 64 (N64) Entertainment System on August 31, 1999 and is a isometric, top-down perspective RPG action game remake of the classic old Arcade game. The game scenario is that in a and long ago, a corrupt mage named Garm used magical Runestones to summon the demon Skorne. Skorne rewarded him by imprisoning his soul in the Underworld and scattering the Runestones throughout the four worlds so that they could never be used against him. You assume the role of a wizard, warrior, valkyrie, or archer and fight through countless enemies in order to defeat the end bosses of each of the four worlds to get the four keys that will allow you into the temple to defeat and banish Skorne. You must collect the Thirteen Runestones, which will allows you into the Underworld where you can finally destroy him. As with most RPG games of the era, you can use magic spells and collect money to buy upgrades. The developer has added four new characters to this version, which is in addition to the four in the arcade version. Each of your characters have unique special attacks skills which you will have to use wisely to master this game. There are also three new worlds that are new to this version making a total of seven. Each of the seven worlds features two to five levels. You begin the game in a terminal hub where you can access the seven worlds. Gauntlet Legends plays in a simi-nonlinear fashion (which I like), but you will still have to accomplish certain tasks in order to unlock other levels. But you can battle and win a level in one world, and then rather than continue on there, you can move to another world. No need to worry about the first world, you can return later to start the next level in the first world you were in.

With an expansion pak installed, as many as four players can band together in an epic quest through seven mystical worlds to defeat the vile Skorne. The expansion pak also support better graphics which results in cleaner visuals and helps the engine render nice looking characters and backgrounds, and adds plenty of polygon-based enemies on screen. The graphics in Gauntlet Legends are very good and the backgrounds are a lot better than you'd expect in the N64. This updated version includes real-time lighting, which of course was never in the arcade version. There are some beautiful visuals and the textures on the mountains, trees and mountains are quite detailed. The sound is upgraded and above average and the gameplay good. Gauntlet Legends for the N64 features rumble pak support and also controller pak support that will allow players to team their evolving Guantlet characters. This game delivers great fun for any RPG fan or even the casual gamer who has followed the series. Pre-owned - Includes Game Only, no manual or instructions are included. Rarity Rating "C-" Gauntlet Legends 64 game review by Prince NES Gamer.
