n64gm141 - Developed by Crystal Dynamics, Inc. and Published by Midway Games, Inc., "Gex 64: Enter the Gecko" was released for the Nintendo 64 (N64) Entertainment System on August 29, 1998. Gex 64: Enter the Gecko is a 3rd-Person Perspective platformer, which is the sequel to the 1994 hit game called Gex. But while the original Gex featured side-scrolling platform action, the sequel "Gex: Enter the Gecko" features a brand new 3D engine that adds a whole new dimension and playability to the game. The game scenario is that once again the dastardly Rez has risen to overlord in the media dimension and the government calls upon Gex to go back in and defeat him. Gecko resists, but is finally persuaded by the tons of money he is offered. You take control of Gecko (voice by comedian Dana Gould) and navigate him through TV Channels that parody famous shows. He has to enter levels through the Televisions in order to collect the three types of remotes that unlock more of the Media Dimension, the boss levels and some secret Televisions. The channels include Cartoon (Toon TV), horror (Scream TV), sci-fi (The Rocket Channel), futuristic (Circuit Central), Kung-Fu (Kung-Fu Theater), Pre-history (The Pre-History Channel), Rezopolis and Channel Z. Gex 64: Enter the Gecko also features a new level that is titled "Gecques Cousteau" (French diver Jacques Cousteau, anyone). This level is played under water and revolves around the Titanic. Gecko defends himself with a signature tail whip attack and can perform a flying karate kick. The satire is thick in this game as Gex is never at a loss for witty and often funny one-liners when he defeats his enemies. But there are also some of his nemeses in this game that can only be overcome by completing diverse puzzles. Gex can also climb walls and ceilings, use machines, bounce on his tail and use his tongue to eat flies for power-ups. He can also tail whip or karate-kick his enemies, boost himself up on ledges by his tail, climb certain walls and ceilings, eat flies for power-ups, always with the wisecracks. The gameplay is smooth and non-linear where you can choose from a selection of multiple routes and / or goals on each level. The graphics, controls and sound on Gex 64: Enter the Gecko, are all average at best and generic. But a good touch is that levels are all replayable anytime after they are completed. Gex: Enter the Gecko is a good, fun game that is very average. In Europe this N64 game is known as Gex 3D: Enter the Gecko, and in Japan as SpinTail. Pre-owned - Includes Game Only - Rarity Rating C - Gex 64: Enter the Gecko game review by Prince "Nes Gamers."
