Thirteen : XIII

$15.99

GCG0190 - Developed and published by Ubisoft "Thirteen: XIII" was released on November 25, 2003. XIII is a cel-shaded first-person shooter based on the popular long-running French Belgian cult comic book that was created by Jean Van Hamme. In playing this game I find that it is highly under-rated. Thirteen definitely has a sense of style to it, with a unique cel-shaded environment that breathes into the scenes a comic book ambience. But don't let that fool you, this game has substance too! XIII (13) is loosely based on the first five comics in the popular fore-mentioned series.

While you begin the game empty-handed, you will quickly find a throwing knife, which you can use to get a pistol, which you can use to get an assault rifle, etc., etc. The scenario is that a man who is suffering from amnesia and quite possibly involved in the recent assassination of the President of the United States. Sound familiar? Yes, it is the theme of the bourne Identity. And as in that book/movie, everyone is trying to kill you. As you progress, you unravel clues behind a conspiracy of epic proportions and you learn more about your secret agent past, and your curious name, XIII. as you play, you will learn skills such as lock picking, handling diverse weapons and silent walking. Gun shots and footsteps are visualized in text and visuals such as head shots are shown in a series of still images. Thirteen: XIII has all the typical First Person Shooter elements. It has sniper rifle, shotgun, grenade launchers submachine gun, flash bangs, all in all more than 15 weapons. XIII also allows you to pick up items such as chairs and bottles to throw at your enemy. Indeed, you will also have interaction with environmental objects and many enemies in levels that take you all over the world. By and large the gameplay isn't much different from other first person shooters, so it's easy to master and a lot of fun. The graphics are a breath of fresh air (looks live a living comic-book), and the music very cinematic with good sound. XIII for the GameCube also features a four-player split-screen mode and the ability to play against bots. What impresses me most with XIII is the lack of mindless and pointless material that is so prevalent in other first person shooters. Thirteen is very immersive and all in all one of the best in depth and exciting shooters of it's type. In China, this game is also known as "Shashou Shisan." Pre-owned in excellent condition. Rated M for Mature. Includes case, disk and instruction manual - Plays on Gamecube or Wii - Rarity Rating B-
