The game is a traditional game of tennis, with the player choosing whether to play singles or doubles. The amount of games and sets are chosen on the game setup menu. The stage is also selected from that menu. During the court overview before the game starts, the player can choose the track played during the game. The Wii version uses multiple different play modes. The player can either swing the remote like a tennis racket, comparable to the tennis game on Wii Sports, use the nunchuck, or use the remote sideways.
Each character has one of the following specialties: speed, control, spin, power, or all round. Each character also has a special ability such as Sonic's Super Sonic ability, which can be occasionally summoned during a match.
